From Katherine: This week, we learned of the passing of our beloved Barbara Jarnigan. Barbara passed away on Dec. 1 from stroke complications.
Many of you reading this post remember working with Barbara at Merhoff-Strate, The Jack Strate Agency, or Strate Insurance Group. She was known internally as "The Sarge," and made sure we ran a tight ship.
I remember visiting Barbara and her best friend and colleague, Gloria Horner, in our old office which is now the home of Morristown Utilities. Barbara was great with children. She always made me feel safe, seen, and strong. She didn't take any crap--whether it be from child or man!--but the way she showed her strength was unique. I knew she loved me.
She talked slowly, intentionally, and always had a glimmer of mischief in her eye. She would talk seriously about a subject one moment and then crack a joke the next. She attended a baby shower in 2018 when I was pregnant with Charlotte. I was about 6 months pregnant at the party, and she walked up to me and said, "what happened to you?" If you know Barbara, you can imagine this conversation. Needless to say, we had a big laugh!
In the summer, we enjoyed the fruits of Barbara and Murrel's labors in the garden. There was nothing better than "Barbara's Creamed Corn." She was generous with her time and her bountiful produce.
With Barbara's memory also comes memories of Gloria Horner who passed away in 2019. I spoke with Barbara on the phone about a month ago, and she told me she still missed Gloria every day. I also remember my grandparents, Jack and Agnes, who I'm sure together with Gloria greeted Barbara as she entered Heaven.
I'm thankful for these people who shaped so much of my early life. I am thankful for how they shaped our business and laid a foundation of respect, hard work, and friendship. I hope you enjoy these pictures and walking down your own version of memory lane as we remember Barbara. π€
