Here are some important things to remember during your holiday shopping spree.
Watch out for store credit cards offers.
As you browse through the mall during the holidays you will be barraged by special offers for opening a store credit card. These offers will likely save you a few dollars on your purchase or offer you a free gift. This sounds great and may entice you to buy a little more because of this "great deal", but watch out. There is a price to pay in the overall picture. Store cards will likely charge a high interest rate and offer a lower credit limit. When you apply for this new credit the store will run your information through their system. They are making a hard inquiry to your credit in order to decide whether to approve your credit. This type of inquiry will negatively affect your credit score. Applying for a few of these store cards for may significantly lower your credit score.
Consider using one of your major credit card with the highest limit available.
In addition to your credit history and the recent inquiries made, a key factor used to calculate your credit score is your credit card usage percentage. This is the percentage of credit used to the credit limit on each card. Owing $700 on a card with a $1,000 limit will have a negative effect on your score while carrying a balance of $2000 on a card with a limit of $7,000 might not. It may me a good idea to pay the balances down before you go shopping so that the balance stays under 30% of the limit.
Cash & Debit Cards.
While "Cash is King" it might not be a great idea to carry around large amounts of cash. Someone may see you checking out at a particular store with a wad of cash on hand and decide that you are a good target. If you feel comfortable using a debit card It may be the a safest way to go and won't affect your credit.
What effect will this have on your credit score?
If you are in the process of or are planning to purchase or refinance a home in the near future, this information is very important. Interest rates on a mortgage often depends on various things including your loan amount, down payment and credit scores. Even a slight drop in your credit score may cause your loan rate to increase.
Also if your family knows that you are planning to purchase a new home, they may want to help you with a cash gift during the holidays. Save yourself the hassle of needing to verify these deposits. Be sure these gifts are in the form of a personal check and keep copies of everything before making a deposit. You may be asked to produce these copies if you go to contract in the near future.
Taking simple precautions could save you both money and aggravation.
