It's easy to think about locking up bad people for 6 heinous crimes. But when you vote on Amendment 1 you need to think about the people who will sit in jail for being accused of one of the 70+ crimes they aren't telling you about...and thousands of those people end up having their cases dismissed or dropped. THAT IS NOT PUBLIC SAFETY. THAT IS GOVERNMENT CONTROL. VOTE NO.

Imagine someone breaking into your home. You defend yourself—and suddenly, you’re the one sitting in a jail cell, charged with murder.

At Morristown Bail Bonds, this was a real client’s experience.

An intoxicated man broke into his home. Our client defended his home by shooting the intruder, who died. He was arrested, charged with voluntary manslaughter, and booked into jail.

But that charge was not the end of his story.

He was able to post bond and face his case from outside a jail cell. Ultimately, he beat the murder charge.

Keep in mind this is a man who did not have a violent criminal history at all and is a local business owner.

Now consider what being denied that opportunity could mean for someone in his position: remaining behind bars while waiting for the legal process to determine the outcome.

That is why Amendment One concerns us. It would expand the circumstances in which courts can deny bail before a conviction, and take away our right that says we are innocent until proven guilty.

We cannot say how a judge would have ruled in our client’s case under this amendment. What we can say is that his experience shows why the distinction between an accusation and a conviction matters.

A charge is serious. So is taking away someone’s freedom before their case is decided when our client was completely doing the right thing!

Before you vote, think about the person who defends their home and then has to defend their freedom.
