Minnesota Paid Leave – Quick Summary for Employers (Effective Jan 1, 2026)
Minnesota’s new Paid Family & Medical Leave (PFML) law is mandatory for every employer with at least one employee working in Minnesota (private, municipal, local government – no size exemption).

👉🏻What you must provide starting 1/1/2026:
• Up to 12 weeks paid family or medical leave + combined 20-week annual cap
• Job protection and continued health benefits during leave
• Partial wage replacement (55–90%, calculated against State Average Weekly Wage)
👉🏻Funding & Contributions (State Plan):
• Payroll premium (percentage of wages up to Social Security cap)
• Employers with 30+ employees: can split cost up to 50/50 with employees
• Employers with ≤30 employees & lower average wages: pay reduced rate and at least 25% of premium
• You may choose to pay 100% of the employee share if you wish

✅ Your options:
• Participate in the State Plan (default), OR
• Offer an approved Private Plan (must meet or exceed State benefits; employee cost cannot exceed State Plan)

👉🏻Key obligations:
• Begin payroll deductions in 2026 (exact rate set by DEED)
• Post multilingual workplace notice and distribute employee notice
• File quarterly wage reports (even with a private plan)

👉🏻This is a required benefit – non-compliance is not an option.
