FIREWOOD TIP: With all of the downed trees, you may be tempted to cut up the limbs and throw them right into the fireplace. Green (fresh and wet) wood such as this can cause a rapid buildup of creosote in your chimney. Creosote is the sticky, waxy, tarry stuff that is VERY flammable and creates a fire hazard in your chimney. This is the stuff that chimney sweep specialists are getting rid of when they inspect and/or clean your chimney on an annual basis (you are calling them out each year, right??). Only drier, well-seasoned wood should be used in fireplaces. Seasoned wood burns cleaner and more efficiently. So, cut up those limbs for now, but let them dry out and season for at least 6 months to a year before using in a fireplace.
