Important insurance information for the flooding and storm events!
- Flood (ground water over the threshold) is only covered by a Flood insurance policy. If you have flooding and a related flood policy, that is where your claim will be filed/processed and I’d recommend filing if you already have damage so your claim is in the queue.
- If you do not carry a flood policy, your primary homeowners or renters policy will not cover damages from rising waters / flood. However, you may have some coverage on your homeowners policy if your damage is storm related like trees falling on your home, wind damage or possibly back-up through drains (if you carry the endorsement).
- When there are multiple types of losses it can be difficult to determine what happened first and what caused damage. If you see water coming up through a floor drain please video it, also take photos of any trees or wind damage that may cause water to come into your home.
- Grab some photos or videos of your belongings, even if this event doesn’t impact you these photos and videos are invaluable in the event of a large loss.
- If you have ground water that came in and you do not carry a Flood Insurance policy, watch the local news for declarations of a state of emergency as resources may be available to help fund the cost of rebuilding and replacing your belongings.
