It was a productive week in Washington, D.C. for this group of Alabama bankers who participated in the Independent Community Bankers of America Capital Summit. The annual summit brings community bankers from across the country together to engage directly with federal lawmakers, advocate for policies that support community banking, and discuss key regulatory and legislative priorities. During the week, Alabama bankers held meaningful meetings with members of Congress and their staff, shared perspectives from their local communities, and received timely policy updates and insights from ICBA leadership.

Alabama families and small businesses are confronting affordability issues in nearly every part of their lives โ€” from buying a home to financing a car to opening a neighborhood business on Main Street. While inflation and supply-chain disruptions are often blamed for rising costs, there is another factor quietly driving prices higher: overregulation of the banking sector. Read more in the article below.

"While inflation and supply-chain disruptions are often blamed for rising costs, there is another factor quietly driving prices higher: overregulation of the banking sector," Alabama Banking Association writes.

SB 292, the Alabama Property Protection Act, has been signed into law by Governor Ivey as Act 2026-536.๐Ÿ‘ This legislation is a major step forward in protecting property owners from title fraud, where criminals impersonate owners to sell or encumber property without their knowledge. The Act adds both prevention measures and faster remedies to detect fraud early, clear title, restore ownership, and prosecute offenders. It also requires identity verification at key stages of listing, selling, and transferring property.

The Act strengthens criminal penalties for fraudulent property transfers, establishes the Alabama Title Fraud Recovery Fund to support victims, and provides an expedited court process to restore ownership of fraudulently obtained property. It also allows probate judges to implement notification systems that alert property owners when documents affecting their property are filed.

Recent data shows that title fraud frequently targets mortgage free, vacant, or unimproved properties in rural areas.

The Alabama Property Protection Act of 2026 was supported by the Alabama Bankers Association, Southeast Land Title Association, Alabama Land Title Association, and Alabama REALTORSยฎ. Thank you to Governor Ivey and members of the Alabama Legislature for their leadership in protecting Alabama property owners.

The Alabama Bankers Association commends Governor Kay Ivey for reinforcing fair, lawful, and unbiased access to financial services through Executive Order No. 743. The order affirms what already defines Alabamaโ€™s banking industry: decisions are based on objective risk management, regulatory compliance, and the law โ€” not politics or ideology.

Alabamaโ€™s banks have long been the financial backbone of our communities, serving individuals, families, and small businesses with integrity and fairness. Treating customers respectfully and operating within the laws governing commercial banking is the hallmark of Alabamaโ€™s bankers.

ABA appreciates Governor Iveyโ€™s leadership in underscoring these values and looks forward to continuing our partnership with state leaders to ensure safe, sound, and accessible banking that strengthens communities statewide.

Alabamaโ€™s banks are ready for business โ€” for every Alabamian, every day.

Community bank deposits help fund local businesses, homes, and growth. But as new payment tools and โ€œrewardsโ€ programs rise, itโ€™s easy to miss whatโ€™s really a depositโ€”and whatโ€™s not. That distinction matters. When deposits leave, local lending feels it. ๐Ÿ‘‰ Read why community bank depos...
