This week, members from CAL FIRE SLU and BEU gathered on hallowed ground for a joint Staff Ride at the Spanish Ranch Fire site, honoring Fire Captain Edwin M. Marty and Firefighters Ronald T. Lorant, Steven R. Manley, and Scott W. Cox. Standing where they once stood, their names were read and their sacrifice remembered.

For L2881, staff rides are a way to respectfully learn from the past while honoring those who paid the ultimate price. Walking this ground allows our members to reflect on the decisions, conditions, and challenges faced that day. Lessons that continue to shape how we train, lead, and protect one another today. It is through this reflection that the fire service grows stronger and safer for the generations that follow.

We move forward in this profession on the shoulders of those who stood before us, honoring their legacy by carrying forward the lessons they left behind.

In recognition of Women’s History Month, we’re proud to highlight the women who serve across our union.
This week we recognize Jessica Currier, a Fire Apparatus Engineer Paramedic with CAL FIRE BEU. Jessica started with CAL FIRE in 2014 in MMU, left to earn her paramedic license, and returned to BEU in 2023. She has successfully completed POST and continues to serve her community on the line and in EMS.
Jessica’s goal is to work full-time in the Prevention Bureau, continuing her commitment to public safety.
Our union is proud of Jessica and all the women across our ranks who help make the fire service stronger every day. 🚒

We are honored to introduce Firefighter Heyward Stovall, the longest-serving seasonal member of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection statewide. Heyward began his fire service career in 1988 in the North Division of the San Benito–Monterey Unit, and the 2025 fire season marked his remarkable 37th year of dedicated service.

Throughout his tenure, Heyward has embodied professionalism, humility, and commitment. Despite being the most seasoned firefighter in our ranks, his strong work ethic, positive outlook, and unwavering pursuit of excellence continue to inspire everyone around him. He has served as a steady source of guidance for generations of Firefighters, Engineers, Captains, and Battalion Chiefs. His experience and leadership have left a lasting impact on countless members of the department.

Heyward’s dedication to CAL FIRE and to the communities we serve stands as a powerful example of what it means to protect and serve with honor.

Today, Heyward is facing a significant medical challenge and is currently hospitalized, requiring ongoing dialysis. For a seasonal firefighter, a sudden and serious health crisis brings immediate and overwhelming financial strain. The inability to work, coupled with increasing medical expenses and daily living costs, has created a hardship no firefighter should endure alone.

To know Heyward is to respect him. Over more than three decades, he has been more than a colleague—he has been a mentor, a guardian, and a guiding force for those who have come through the unit boundaries of BEU. He has shared his knowledge, supported and protected new firefighters, and helped shape the careers of many who serve today, as well as those who have since retired.

Now, it is our turn to support him with the same strength, loyalty, and compassion he has shown to all of us.
🙏 Please consider donating or sharing the fundraiser link to help Heyward and his family during this difficult time. https://fundthefirst.com/campaign/aid-for-firefighter-stovall-medical-care-and-recovery-costs-xv4sln

🔥⚽ CAL FIRE United Takes 1st Place! ⚽🔥
CAL FIRE proudly represented at the 1st Annual SF Firefighters 7v7 Soccer Tournament on Treasure Island — and came out undefeated champions after three hard-fought matches! 💪
This year’s squad featured players from both the CAL FIRE San Benito-Monterey Unit (BEU) and the Tehama-Glenn Unit (TGU), showcasing teamwork, skill, and the shared brotherhood that unites our firefighters both on and off the field.
The event supported the San Francisco Firefighters Cancer Prevention Foundation, combining competition and camaraderie for a great cause.
Huge thanks to our hosts — the San Francisco Fire Department, SF Glens Soccer Club, and everyone who made this inaugural tournament a success.
