Quick question: when I say COA (Chart of Accounts) do you know what that is?
Itโs ok if you donโt ๐ Even though itโs a (very!) important part of bookkeeping, itโs mostly behind the scenes
๐ Itโs the map that routes all your financial information into your financial reports (like your P+L)
๐ When that map is clean and correct, it provides a birdโs eye view of your business, and helps you build profit-making strategies
๐ BUT if the map is messy or wrong, youโll have duplicate (or missing) transactions, unclear data, and incorrect strategies
Hereโs the 5 standard accounts youโll find in your COA:
(๐ญ) ๐๐ฆ๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ฆ โ Resources your company owns
EX: Land, equipment, trademarks
(๐ฎ) ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ง๐๐๐ฆ โ Debts your company owes
EX: Accounts payable, wages payable
(๐ฏ) ๐๐ค๐จ๐๐ง๐ฌ = Assets - Liabilities
(This is the value of the company to its owner)
(๐ฐ) ๐ฅ๐๐ฉ๐๐ก๐จ๐ โ Income your business brings in
EX: Sales of goods, services, rental income
(๐ฑ) ๐๐ซ๐ฃ๐๐ก๐ฆ๐๐ฆ โ Resources spent generating revenue
EX: Utilities, rent payments
These 5 standard accounts will also have subaccounts, unique to each individual business.
You can add and/or edit your subaccounts, BUT hereโs a few tips to keep in mind:
โ
Donโt add too many โ itโll make it too hard to see the big picture in the reports
โ
However, make sure you have enough to understand your revenue streams (one big โsalesโ subaccount wonโt show comparisons between your products and/or services)
โ
And have a consistent naming system for the accounts โ if not, it can lead to confusing duplicate accounts
By the way, if you want to learn more, I attached a helpful article ๐

โฆ Or maybe you arenโt the kinda person who says, โOoo! Chart of Accounts?? Lemme read more about that!!โ ๐คฃ
If youโd rather just hand this kinda stuff over to someone else so you donโt have to worry (or learn!) about it โ just reach out. I handle this for my clients on a daily basis, and Iโd love to help you, too!
