The Gift of Losing
Sometimes the biggest risk isn’t losing — it’s winning too soon.
Years ago, a young man had the chance to hold onto an asset that eventually became worth over a hundred million dollars. Through a series of unfortunate events, he lost access to it entirely.
You’d expect bitterness. But years later, his reflection surprised me: “Honestly — if I’d cashed it in back then, it would have ruined me.”
That line has stayed with me. Because the truth is, not everyone is ready for a windfall. Getting more than you can handle can be just as destabilizing as losing what you have.
The best financial plan isn’t just about building — it’s about growing with what you build. Developing the steadiness, the discipline, and the perspective to handle whatever comes. That’s why I believe planning is about more than numbers. It’s about character.
The long view isn’t just a strategy. It’s a way of life.
