Early morning appointments are normally available, and it's a good way to spend your morning getting something important accomplished! We start at 8.

Our hours are Monday through Friday, 8 in the morning to 8 at night, and Saturday 9 to 5. Evenings work too if that suits you better.

You don't have to change anything but it is good to get it checked by a professional to assure that there is not something better available. If you do make a change, your new plan will start January 1.

Today's the day. Medicare open enrollment is officially open, and it runs through December 7.

Here's why it's worth checking your plan even if you're happy with it. Plans change every year. Your premium, your copays, your drug list and your doctors can all be different come January 1, and the plan won't call to walk you through it. You don't want to be the person that gets stuck with a bad plan for next year!

A check takes about 30 minutes. If your plan is still the right one, we'll tell you so and you're done.

Check your mailbox with a careful eye this time of year.

You'll see envelopes that look like they came from the government, with words like "Medicare Benefits Notice" or "Final Notice" printed on the front. Most of it is advertising made to look official, and some of it is an outright scam.

Never give out your Medicare number because a letter told you to call. If you're not sure about something you got in the mail, don't call the number on it. Call us at (318) 351-1200 and we'll tell you what it is.

The best plan for you this year may not be the best one next year.

Plans change every January. The monthly premium, what you pay at the doctor, which medicines are covered, which doctors are in the network. Your health changes too. A plan that fit fine last year can cost you a lot more next year, and you wouldn't know unless somebody checked.

Open enrollment starts this Thursday, October 15. It takes about 30 minutes to compare, and if your plan is still the right one, we'll tell you so.

Don't throw that letter away, SAVE IT. It tells you your coverage ends December 31, and it gives you a guaranteed right to buy certain Medicare Supplement plans with no health questions asked. That door isn't usually open, and the letter is your proof.

Open enrollment starts next Thursday, and the phone is about to start ringing.

A lot of those calls and TV ads come from call centers in other states. The person on the line has never met you, doesn't know your doctors, and you probably won't reach the same person twice. It's easy to end up switched to a different plan over the phone before you've had time to think.

You don't have to decide anything on a phone call. If somebody calls you about Medicare and you didn't ask them to, it's fine to hang up.

Medicare open enrollment starts next Thursday, October 15.

Before then, go find the letter your plan mailed you last month. It's called the Annual Notice of Change, or ANOC, and it lists what will be different about your plan next year. Most folks set it on the counter and never open it.

If you read it twice and it still doesn't make sense, make an appointment with us and bring what you have. We'll go through it with you line by line. If you can't find it, we can pull up the changes and go over them with you during your appointment.

Enrollment season means a lot of phone calls from numbers you don't know. Here's how to quiet them down.

On an iPhone:
Open Settings, tap Apps, then Phone. Tap Screen Unknown Callers and choose Silence. On an older iPhone, it's Settings, then Phone, then Silence Unknown Callers. Calls from numbers that aren't in your contacts will go straight to voicemail.

On an Android phone:
Open the Phone app and tap the three dots at the top. Tap Settings, then Blocked numbers, and turn on Unknown. That blocks private and hidden numbers. Samsung phones call it Block numbers.

One thing to do first. Save the numbers you do want to hear from, like your doctor, your pharmacy and us at (318) 351-1200, so those calls still come through. If a call matters, they'll leave a message.
