Recently we have been asked the question, "Can a law enforcement officer "co-sign" or provide collateral for a bail bond".

The answer is YES, and i have verified this with the NC Department of Insurance, Bail Bond Regulatory Division.

N.C.G.S 15A-541 restricts law enforcement officers from becoming surety on a bail bond. There are 3 ways to become surety on a bail bond in NC. The first way is to be a surety company, and hire licensed NC Bail agents to post bonds for you, the second way is to become a "Professional Bail Bondsman", meaning you put up your own money, get a licence and post bonds. the 3rd and final way is an accommodation bondsman, in this case and individual puts up the entire amount of a bond in cash, or property therefore not needing a bail bondsman.

Co-signing a bond is not becoming a surety, therefor ANYONE can co-sign a bond as collateral, ensuring that the defendant will appear in court.

As a friendly reminder, NC Courts are now back in session. It is your responsibility to check at http://www1.aoc.state.nc.us/www/calendars/CriminalQuery.html, or call the clerk of court in the county of your case, to find out when your court date is. As always, it is YOUR responsibility to keep up with your court dates. Be sure to practice whatever social distancing measures are in place at each courthouse.

North Carolina Chief Justice Beasley just announced that: "Effective Monday, March 16th, I am ordering that most district and superior court cases be continued for at least 30 days, with some limited exceptions"

Accelerated Bail Bond will be updating your court dates in our system as they become available. As always our agents are available to help with questions or concerns. Feel free to message us, text us, or call 336-462-8488.

Remember it is ultimately your responsibility to keep up with your court dates. You can head over to nccourts.org and search for changes to your court dates.

As our world faces this crisis, we hope that all of our defendant's, their families as well as law enforcement, jail, and court personnel remain safe and healthy.
