This weekend, Rhodes, Luke, and I spent time at City of Mobile - Government Dog River Park for a Scouting America service project.
In less than 30 minutes, we collected nearly 40 lbs of trash.
Afterward, we heard from a representative with Mobile Baykeeper—and it turned into a great lesson on how our local environment actually works:
Watershed: Everything that drains into Mobile Bay. What we do in our neighborhoods—fertilizer, litter, runoff—eventually flows there.
Estuary: Mobile Bay is where freshwater meets the saltwater of the Gulf of Mexico—one of the most productive ecosystems in the country.
Brackish water: That mix of fresh and salt water supports the fish, shrimp, and wildlife that define our Gulf Coast.
Why it matters for us in Mobile:
Cleaner streets → cleaner water → healthier fisheries, recreation, and quality of life.
And the best part—we got to enjoy it. We wrapped up the afternoon fishing together.
Simple, but real: What we do on land doesn’t stay there.
Grateful for time with my boys and opportunities like this to learn, serve, and invest in the place we call home.
