Exciting news for Missoula families as the YMCA's major rebuild/remodel project is nearing its fundraising goal for a new facility! With nearly $13.5 million raised towards the $15 million campaign, the Y will soon be able to demo its old child care building and open a brand new, 7,000-square-foot child care center. Currently caring for approximately 130 children between two campuses, the Y has a waitlist of nearly 60 children. As the largest licensed care provider in Montana, this new center will be able to add room for about 50 more children and infants.

But that's not all. The Y is also remodeling nearly all of its main facility, adding a new exercise studio and retiled pool.

A dazzling new piece of public artwork has recently been installed at the Missoula Public Library. Late last month, Denver-based artist Mike Lustig's interactive art project constructed with hundreds of glass hexagons was unveiled in the library's stairwell leading from the ground level parking garage to the main floor. The mirrored art piece, entitled "2,710 Points of Light," allows the viewer to see themselves in new ways, and thanks to the project's location, it changes with the environment's lighting throughout the day and night.

The library's new public art project is the result of a collaboration between Missoula's Public Art Committee, DASHBOARD, an Atlanta based 501c3 nonprofit organization, and Lustig.

A 30-day scoping comment period is currently taking place. The Missoula Ranger District is seeking public feedback on the proposed Granite Graves Shaded Fuelbreak Project.According to plans for the proposed project, the addition of shaded fuelbreaks along 37 miles of critical public roadways located within the Fish, Graves, and Howard Creek drainages north of Highway 12 on National Forest lands in Missoula and Mineral Counties would look to improve future fire management actions with extra safety for the public and first responders through improved egress and access.Shaded fuelbreaks are strips of cleared or thinned vegetation designed to reduce the amount of fuel (vegetation) available for a wildfire to spread.
