📚 HR 101: Back to School on Your People Policies!

Pop Quiz #1: Meal breaks.
Answer: FALSE

For California employees, an employer generally cannot require an employee to work through an unpaid meal break, even if the employee agrees to do so. Meal periods must generally be duty-free, and the employee must be relieved of all work duties.

If an employee voluntarily chooses to work during a meal period, that can still create wage-and-hour compliance issues, so employers should have processes to ensure meal periods are actually taken.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001.

We pause to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day. We remember the victims, their families, the first responders who ran toward danger, the countless individuals who showed extraordinary courage, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

As an HR organization, we are reminded of the importance of compassion, community, and looking out for one another—especially during times of uncertainty and hardship.

Today, we honor their memory by coming together, supporting one another, and never forgetting.
