September is National Preparedness Month. The part that never makes the checklist is the paperwork. Here's the test. If something happened tonight, could the person you'd want handling it find the will, the health care directive, the insurance policies, and a list of your accounts?

For most families the honest answer is no, and it usually isn't because the documents don't exist. It's because they're spread across a filing cabinet, an email inbox, and an attorney's office from twelve years ago.
One afternoon fixes it. One folder, one location, and one conversation with the person who would need it.
Estate Planning Awareness Week is in October, so we'll be back on this. Getting the folder built is the part you can do now.
Book a call. Bring what you can find and we'll tell you what's missing.

Minnesota runs on shop floors, job sites, and shift schedules.

A lot of the families we work with built businesses that make things, fix things, and keep things running. The manufacturers, the tradespeople, the union members who spent thirty years earning a pension and want to be sure it holds up.

Today is theirs. Thank you for the work.

First Day of Fall!

Here's the view from our office this morning.
Fall is the busiest planning season of our year and it's also our favorite. The calendar finally gives people a reason to sit down and look at the whole picture instead of one account at a time.

Between now and December 31, four things need a decision from almost every household we work with.
• Benefits elections. The enrollment window is short and the default is rarely the right answer.
• College funding. Tuition bills and aid applications don't wait for a convenient month.
• Tax decisions. Most of them close on December 31, and the good ones take longer than a week to put in place.
• Cash flow through the holidays. This is where solid plans quietly come apart.
We run all four in one meeting. It takes about an hour, and it's the reason our clients' Decembers are boring.

Book a call and let's get your fall picture current.

Financial Aid Season Is Here! Two things happen every fall. The tuition bills arrive, and the application for next year's aid opens. Most families handle the first one and put off the second.

Worth doing this month:
• Create the student's FSA ID. It takes minutes, and it's where most families stall.
• Find the tax return the form will ask for. It's an earlier year than parents expect, so that number is already locked in.
• Check each school's own deadline. Some are earlier than the federal one, and some aid runs out.
• Ask before you move any money around. What the formula counts is not obvious, and the timing matters.

The opening date has shifted the last few years, so watch for the announcement rather than assuming last year's date. A lot of families skip the form because they're sure they won't qualify. Some aid isn't need based, and you can't get any of it without filing.

Book a call and we'll walk through it with you.

We covered Minnesota's new retirement plan requirement last month. Since deadlines are approaching for more employers, here's the short refresher.

The rule: Minnesota employers that don't offer a qualified retirement plan will be required to auto-enroll employees in a state-facilitated IRA program. The requirement is phasing in from larger employers down to smaller ones.

What to check this month:
• If you already offer a 401(k) or another qualified plan, you're exempt. Nothing to do.
• If you don't, find your deadline. The phase-in schedule is based on employer size, and smaller employers' dates are coming up sooner than many expect.
• Before defaulting to the state program, compare it against starting your own plan. Federal startup credits can cover most of the cost for small employers, and an owner's own contribution limits are dramatically higher in a 401(k).

The state program is a floor, built for simplicity. Many owners can do meaningfully better with a plan of their own.

A Look at the Fall Ahead

September is almost here, and fall is the season when planning gets real. Here's what's ahead at E-Wealth and what deserves a spot on your calendar.

• Year-end tax planning season begins. The moves that lower your 2026 bill happen in the next three months, not in December. If you haven't run a projection yet, now is the time.
• Retirement plan deadlines approach. Employers wanting a new 401(k) in place for this year need to start soon, and Minnesota's retirement requirement makes this fall the right moment to decide.
• Open enrollment and benefits reviews. A good window to revisit insurance coverage alongside the rest of the plan.
• A fall seminar is in the works. We're planning our next educational event for later this season. Details to come, and our email list hears first.

Summer is for momentum. Fall is for decisions. We're looking forward to a strong finish to the year alongside our clients and community.

Estate planning can feel enormous, so here's the simplest honest version of it.
For a business owner, three documents do most of the work:

• A will with current beneficiaries and a named guardian if you have minor children. This is the floor. It determines who gets what and who raises your kids. If yours predates your current balance sheet or your current family, it's due for a review.
• A buy-sell agreement for the business. If you have a partner, this document decides what happens to the company if one of you dies, becomes disabled, divorces, or simply wants out. Without it, those decisions get made by circumstance, and circumstance is a poor negotiator.
• Powers of attorney for finances and health care. If you're incapacitated even temporarily, someone needs legal authority to sign, pay, and decide. For an owner, that includes keeping the business running while you can't.

There's more sophistication available (trusts, gifting strategies, insurance structures), and for many Minnesota owners approaching the state's $3M estate exemption, it's worth exploring.
But these three documents, current and coordinated, put you ahead of most owners we meet.
Book a call and we'll review where your documents stand.

Trump Accounts: Three Questions Parents Keep Asking

A month into helping families set these up, three questions come up more than any others. Here they are, answered plainly.
"Is the $1,000 automatic?"

For eligible children, the government contribution is made at birth. The details of eligibility and administration are still being finalized, so the practical step for parents is making sure you understand the requirements as they're published and don't leave the contribution unclaimed.
"Should I stop funding the 529?"

No. The 529 is still the strongest vehicle for education savings, with tax-free growth for qualified expenses and a Minnesota state deduction on contributions. The Trump account is a second track with more flexibility, not a replacement for the first one.
"What if my child was born before the program started?"

The government contribution focuses on children born after the legislation's enactment. Rules for older children continue to develop, which is exactly why a conversation with an advisor is worth more than a headline right now.

Two accounts, two purposes, one goal: your kids entering adulthood with real financial options.
