The First Medical Assistance or Medicaid Eligibility Change in Minnesota is in Effect

As of October 1, 2026, federal law has changed Medical Assistance (MA) eligibility for certain noncitizen adults in Minnesota.
Adults age 21 and older who are not pregnant and have certain immigration statuses—including refugees and asylees, will no longer qualify for Medical Assistance. Many people affected by this change may qualify for MinnesotaCare instead.

If your Medical Assistance has ended and you have serious medical needs, a disability, or a medical condition that may require emergency or hospital care, there may be other coverage options available, including Emergency Medical Assistance (EMA) for qualifying medical emergencies.

We understand that this is a significant and confusing transition. You do not have to navigate it alone.

🚨 A major Medical Assistance change is coming October 1 in Minnesota.

Beginning October 1, 2026, new federal rules will change who can qualify for Medical Assistance (MA) based on immigration status.

Some noncitizen adults who currently have MA — including some refugees, asylees, humanitarian parolees, trafficking victims and others with humanitarian immigration statuses — may lose their MA coverage after September 30.

If you receive a notice saying your Medical Assistance is ending, don't ignore it. You may have other coverage options, including MinnesotaCare.

At Briva Health, we're helping Minnesotans understand these changes, determine what coverage they may qualify for, and take the necessary next steps to avoid a gap in health insurance.
