It was an honor to join the Roosevelt Institute Delegation to the Netherlands for the International Four Freedoms Awards last week. The awards are based on Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 Four Freedoms speech, which defined freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear as universal rights. Honorees included Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, French activist Gisèle Pelicot, the Committee to Protect Journalists and Chilean activist Isidora Uribe Silva.

A few months ago, I had the opportunity to rock the hard hat and tour the construction site with Avenues for Youth, and last week, we celebrated achieving their campaign goal making this project possible. Avenues for Youth can now serve 500 youth annually with more emergency shelter beds, transitional housing and affordable apartments, wrapped in supportive services for young people experiencing homelessness.

The flurry of first day of school pictures has made me nostalgic, as my daughter kicks off her first day of college at the University of Vermont. The weekend was bittersweet, but it reminded me to spend time in the garden, to savor her younger brother and know she's ready for all the world has to offer.

Kids headed to college this fall? My daughter visited my office last week to complete her health care directive and power of attorney in advance of heading across the country this fall to begin college at the University of Vermont. To me, she will always be my baby, but in the eyes of the law when they turn 18, she's an adult. Plan accordingly.
