Welcome to April! Here are some fun facts about the month we are in now:
• In Belgium, France and Italy, there is an April Fool tradition of playing pranks on people by tacking paper fish on their backs.
• April is National Autism Awareness Month, National Pet Month and Jazz Appreciation Month, Global Child Nutrition Month, Humor Month, Mathematics Awareness Month, among many other celebrations.
• In the initial Roman calendar April was the second month of the year until January and February were added in 700 BC. It is thought that the name April comes from the Latin word "to open" and describes the trees and flowers blooming in springtime.
• In the Southern Hemisphere, April is the same as October in the Northern Hemisphere.
• In the US, a list compiled by the Social Security Administration in 2009 found April to be the 353rd most popular girls name.
• April starts on the same day of the week as July in all years.
• Did you know? … NASA announced the selection of America's first seven astronauts on April 9, 1959. Noah Webster copyrighted the first edition of his dictionary April 14, 1828. The United States Library of Congress was established April 24, 1800
