What's Employee Benefits Day?
It started in 2004 for two things:
1. To empower employees to take advantage of their benefits and become more familiar with what they have available.
2. To give recognition to people within companies that help make benefits possible and focus their efforts on helping employees get the most out of their employment experience!
Not in all cases, but in many situations companies and staff are limited on what advice they can give to help provide guidance when it comes to things that involve financial and/or tax implications. That's where professionals come in!!
So the day passed, but what do you have an opportunity to do:
1. Check to see what benefits your employer offers for your position. Some benefits (like health insurance) require you to sign up at specific times throughout the year, but other benefits are accessible throughout the year, and you may be able to start using them now!
2. Look at what you're already opted into, and check for areas that may fall short. For example, you may have 401(k) matching, but are your funds actually invested, or are they just sitting in an account?
Another common example is life insurance. Not all employers offer it, but those that do rarely offer enough to fully cover the needs of the average person or family!
Rather than only know you have something or that it's available to you, make sure to talk with professionals outside your company so they can help educate you on the good parts and potential shortfalls of your benefits...
As you read this, if all you know is that you have life insurance, or that you have $100,000 of coverage, or 2X your salary, or that you have group-term, etc... those are all good things to know, but still leave a lot of important questions on the table.
Give yourself the peace of mind about what you're getting at work. Take charge so you know if there is something you can do to take better advantage of the benefits you have, and gain an understanding of what may be falling a bit short. Give me a call, send me an email, or shoot me a text today!!
