This man is one of my hero's!

Oliver "Porky" Bickar, a Normandy veteran, came up with the idea in 1971 and spent three years gathering tires. When April 1, 1974 dawned clear, he told his wife he had to do it that day, and she answered, "Just don't make an ass of yourself."

Bickar and a few friends tied the tires into two 150-foot rope slings, then hired a helicopter to lift them to the summit with diesel, rags and smoke bombs. While the chopper went back for the second load, he painted the message in the snow, and the smoke was visible across the sound before they got home.

He'd warned the FAA, fire department and police, but he forgot the Coast Guard, so its investigation was entirely real. Once the town was in on it, most people loved the joke, and an Alaska Airlines flight was diverted so passengers could see the fake eruption.
