The purpose of Labor Day is to honor and recognize American workers and their contributions to the country’s economy, society, and prosperity.

In the United States, Labor Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. It grew out of the labor movement in the late 1800s, when workers organized for better conditions, including reasonable working hours, safer workplaces, and fairer treatment.

Congress made Labor Day a federal holiday in 1894.

Today, it serves both as a celebration of workers and, informally, as a marker of the end of summer, often associated with cookouts, parades, travel, and a three-day weekend.
