☀ ECLIPSE HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS! 🌕
With the total solar eclipse line of totality crossing through the City of Middletown on Monday, April 8, 2024, the City wants to inform residents and visitors of some health and safety tips regarding the rare event.
Problems can arise from total darkness such as traffic issues and health issues regarding eyesight. In coordination with the Middletown Health Department and Middletown Division of Police, here are a few safety tips to keep in mind.
Timing of the eclipse: Partial totality will begin at approximately 1:45pm and last through 4:30 p.m. Full totality in Middletown is expected to occur at 3:09 p.m. and last approximately 3-4 minutes.
Health Tips
- Do not stare directly into the sun during the solar eclipse. Doing so can cause serious and lasting eye damage that can affect eyesight.
- Eclipse glasses are available at several businesses in Middletown. Be sure to buy a pair to aid in viewing the eclipse. Glasses should be certified IOS 12312-2.
- Do not look at the eclipse through a camera lens, binoculars, or telescope.
- This is still an event involving the sun – so take normal skin precautions as well, such as wearing sunscreen and wearing a hat or protective clothing.
Safety Tips!
- A high quantity of people is expected in Middletown to view the eclipse. Be aware of your surroundings and take any precautions you would take when attending an event with large crowds.
- If you are on the road, particularly a busy road or highway, avoid pulling over and stopping to view the eclipse. This can cause traffic accidents and traffic backups as a result.
- Do not exit a vehicle to view the eclipse, particularly on busy roads or the highway.
- If you are driving, be extra cautious of people crossing the street or in the roadway. During an eclipse, the resulting darkness may make it difficult to see people as they cross.
- If you want to view the eclipse, it is best to be at a destination ahead of time instead of traveling. This can limit possible concerns for the people and law enforcement.
Other Tips!
- Be aware that large crowds are expected in Middletown and in Butler County.
- There will be an increase in law enforcement from Middletown and surrounding jurisdictions to handle the bigger crowds.
- Due to the larger crowds in and around Middletown, there is the possibility of disruption of communication and operational services, such as cell phones and internet.
- With gasoline at a premium due to the expected high amount of visitors, consider filling up gas tanks over the weekend before the event.
- Expect heavy traffic after the eclipse event.
- The City recommends visiting the restaurants and cultural establishments in Downtown Middletown while visiting the City.
- Middletown, Inc. is hosting a “Planning For Darkness Total Solar Eclipse Viewing Party” on April 8th at the Swallen’s Lot in Middletown. Be sure to check out DMI’s website and social media pages for more information.
- With this event taking place during severe weather season, it may be a good idea to get your emergency plans updated and dusted off, including fully-charged phones, contact information for family and friends, basic supplies, and checking in on neighbors and seniors.
