Over 20 years ago, my cousin Charles Kaufman was killed in Baghdad by a roadside bomb. Time has passed, but the absence doesn't fade—and Memorial Day has never felt like just another date on the calendar since.
Today is a reminder that behind every name we honor is a life, a family, and a future that was changed forever. We remember the service members who gave their lives in defense of the values and freedoms our country was founded on, and we hold space for the loved ones who continue to carry that loss.
Charles, words will never fully capture what your sacrifice means. But I can say this with certainty: you are remembered, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten.
