On top of the cold π₯Άπ₯Ά
A major winter storm is on the way to Indiana, with first snowflakes expected by early Saturday afternoon.
TIMEFRAME:
System begins Saturday around 12pm, and will overspread the entire state by dinner time (5-7pm) It will continue all night into much of Sunday before tapering off late Sunday night and early Monday morning.
SNOW TOTALS:
Yes we are aware this is a lot of snow.. no we don't think these totals are too high. This system has a TON of moisture, and snow ratios are higher, around 20 to 1. This leads us to believe that higher end totals are possible, if not likely with this system. Further north, less snow is expected with areas such as Gary and South Bend sneaking into a zone of 3-7". Keep in mind, lake enhancement may help snow totals, but this is uncertain at this time. As we move south, areas from Rensselaer up to Angola and Fort Wayne are within our 4-9" zone. From there, a wide zone of 8-12" or greater is in place for areas such as Kokomo, Indianapolis, Richmond, and Terre Haute. Then, attention shifts further south across Jasper, Versailles, and Bloomington areas, where a narrow band of significant snowfall is looking likely. we've opted to go 10-16" in this zone. Lastly, there is a chance that far southern counties may mix some sleet in at times which *MAY* reduce totals. This is why you see Evansville and Corydon in the 8-12" zone instead of the 10-16". If no mixing occurs, we could see higher amounts.
IMPACTS:
Travel will be treacherous to near impossible for nearly all of central and southern Indiana. Travel is NOT advised from Saturday night through Monday morning. If you can stay home, do so. Otherwise, winds will gust to 25mph during Sunday. This could lead to blowing and drifting snow as this particular system will bring the light and fluffy type of snow which is more prone to blowing. Cold air will continue as well, with wind chills below zero. Bundle up!
SHIFTS:
Minor adjustments to storm track remain possible, as well as snow totals, Overall, we feel confident in this forecast at this current time.
Stay tuned to updates with this system. Now is the time to prepare if you are not already.
