🌴✨ Meet Coral Gables, Florida Aka The City Beautiful. Coral Gables has some fun stories hiding behind those Mediterranean-style streets.

🏊 The Venetian Pool started as a rock quarry! The limestone used to build early Coral Gables homes was quarried right where the pool is today. In 1924, that quarry was transformed into the iconic Venetian Pool. It holds about 820,000 gallons of water and is fed by an underground aquifer.
🏨 The Biltmore has a Spanish connection. The famous Biltmore Hotel’s tower was inspired by the Giralda tower of Seville Cathedral in Spain. When it opened in 1926, its grand opening brought about 1,000+ VIP guests from New York on two special trains.
🍊 Before the city, there were citrus groves. George Merrick’s family grew grapefruit, avocados and other crops on the land that would eventually become Coral Gables. Their first home was actually built using local coral rock.
📚 The first library was a community project. In 1927, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club helped establish a lending library and reading room. The first 300 books were obtained by writing directly to authors and asking them to donate copies!
🏙️ The city was planned before it was built. By early 1921, George Merrick’s vision for Coral Gables had been mapped to create what he envisioned as a “City Beautiful.”
🌿 And today? Coral Gables has more than 60 parks+ & open spaces with more than 1,000+ properties listed on its local historic registry.
