Saw a collection on your report "opened" last year for a bill you fell behind on long before? Those can be two different dates.
A collection account can show a "date opened," which is often when the collection agency took over or bought the debt. That's not necessarily when you first fell behind. The date of first delinquency traces back to the original missed payment with the original creditor, and it's the date that matters for how the account is handled on your report. When you review a collection, look for both dates, check the original creditor listed, and compare them with your own records. If something doesn't match what actually happened, you have the right to dispute inaccurate information.
