The U.S. The Department of Energy announces a $6.6 billion loan to Rivian to build an EV factory in Georgia. The automaker is one of the beneficiaries of a last-minute push by the Biden administration to prop up EVs before Donald Trump returns to the White House. Nobody understands the value of the loan program better than Trump’s right-hand man, Elon Musk, who would likely not be the world’s richest man today if Tesla hadn’t scored $465 million from the same program in 2009. These days, however, Musk is curiously less supportive of subsidies for fledgling EV makers.

The loan was approved before Trump takes office.

Chinese tech giant Baidu is rolling out a new purpose-built robotaxi in cities across China. The company describes it as a Level 4 autonomous vehicle that costs as little as $30,000 to make. That the company is able to deliver a high-quality AV for so little should strike fear into the hearts of U.S. competitors, writes the Verge’s Andrew Hawkins. Waymo’s performance is comparable, but it has yet to show it can bring costs nearly as low as Baidu. Meanwhile, Tesla hasn’t even shown that it can develop the technology, let alone at a low price. Sorry, Elon.

The vehicle costs less than $30,000 to manufacture.

Electric vehicle ownership is on the rise, with 1.2 million cars sold last year. Realtor.com and Kelley Blue Book ranked the top 20 US cities for EV owners to live. Cities that ranked highly have more homes that can accommodate EVs and more public charging ports.

Owning an electric car can be a headache, and where you live can make it easier or harder. Here are the best places for EV drivers.

Electric vehicle drivers are saving everyone billions of dollars on their monthly electricity bills, a recent study found. EV drivers provided more than $3 billion in net revenue to the grid between 2011 and 2021. The net effect is that the cost of electricity for all consumers is lower largely because many EV drivers are charging at home overnight when demand for electricity is far below the electric grid’s capacity. Many future-looking studies have predicted that vehicle electrification would have this downward pressure effect on rates. This study uses real-world data to show that this effect isn’t just a future theory — it’s been happening for over a decade across the U.S.

Endera, a pioneering technology company in the electric vehicle industry, introduces the launch of the “Endera EV Pool,” an innovative fleet of electric cutaway buses. This solution is designed to reshape the landscape of the electric vehicle market by addressing the critical industry-wide challenge of extended lead times for electric vehicle delivery. Key Features of the Endera EV Pool: 1)Pre-Built Fleet: Endera's EV pool consists of chassis that are electrified before the construction of the custom body. 2)Rapid Delivery: Customers experiencing delays due to extended lead times can now anticipate receiving their vehicles faster than ever before. 3)Large Stock Capacity: With a substantial chassis allocation, Endera can stock up to 250 vehicles, ensuring a steady supply to meet customer demands. The introduction of the Endera EV Pool marks a significant milestone in the electric vehicle industry. Historically, lead times for electric cutaways have exceeded a year. Endera’s initiative drastically reduces this wait time, making sustainable transportation solutions more accessible and efficient for fleets.

For the United States to meet its climate goals, virtually all trucks must be zero-emissions by 2050. While trucks are only 4 percent of the vehicles on the road, they make up almost a quarter of the country’s transportation emissions. Amazon, for example, has ordered and deployed thousands of electric delivery vans made by Rivian; the company says it has electric trucks operating in 1,800 cities in the United States. FedEx has electric trucks rolling through the streets of Los Angeles. The logistics company Schneider has dozens of Class 8 electric semi-trucks delivering loads throughout Southern California.

Electric trucks still make up only a tiny fraction of trucks on the road in the United States.

The US Postal Service debuted its first EV charging stations in Atlanta, Georgia, today, the first of many expected to be deployed at “hundreds” of new sorting and delivery centers this year. It’s a key step in the Postal Service’s plan to put together one of the nation’s biggest EV fleets, made up of more than 66,000 delivery vehicles. USPS is working on converting around 400 sites into sorting and delivery centers that will become “hubs to deploy EVs along local carrier routes.” The centers will serve larger geographic areas than the old-school postal offices they replace. Three different companies — Siemens, Rexel / ChargePoint, and Blink — will manufacture the Postal Service’s first 14,000 EV chargers.

USPS also showed off new electric delivery vehicles.

Retail giant Costco has installed on-site solar generation at a new electric truck charging project in southern California. Costco contracted Washington-based Trinity Structures to design and build an off-grid rooftop solar system at its distribution center in Mira Loma. Trinity completed the project in four months. The “solar electrification structure,” as Trinity calls it, is not connected to the grid and provides direct, on-site power, similar to a microgrid. The solar panels can potentially produce about 100 MWh annually—enough to provide 11,750 hours of EV charging. Costco, which operates more than 850 warehouses worldwide, plans to convert all its depot yard trucks from diesel to alternative fuel models by 2035. The company’s plan envisions more than 100 on-site solar facilities.
