Twenty-five years later, we remember the fallen. We honor those who served. We stand with the families who still carry their loss.

We remember the 2,977 innocent lives taken that day—people who went to work, boarded airplanes, answered calls for help, and never came home. We honor the firefighters, police officers, first responders, and ordinary Americans who ran toward danger when every instinct told them to run away.

9/11 was also one of the reasons I chose to serve my country. Today, I think about the men and women who raised their right hand afterward and answered that same call—especially those who gave their lives, those who came home wounded, and the families who carried the burden alongside them.

And we should never sanitize what happened. The September 11 attacks were acts of jihadist terrorism carried out by al-Qaeda. We can unequivocally condemn the terrorists and the extremist ideology they invoked to justify murdering innocent people while recognizing that their actions do not represent Muslims as a whole.

May we never forget what was taken from us—and never forget the courage and unity America showed in response.
