He broke with many literary traditions in favor of stream-of-consciousness, surrealist, and even mystical writings. Miller’s spirited approach was outlined by the “11 Commandments for Writing” he devised in the 1930s while working on “Tropic of Cancer.” Commandment number three banished anxiety and worry, and Miller gave himself permission to invest fully and passionately in whatever task was before him.

Simone Weil (born in 1909 in Paris) was a French mystic, philosopher, and activist. After being fired from several jobs as a schoolteacher for her social activism, she took a job in an auto factory so she could study and write about the effects of heavy industrial labor. When the Germans invaded France at the start of World War I, she fled with her family to the United States, but refused to eat more than the rations allotted to the French people back in Europe. She lived a fiercely principled life, but exhausted by her political demonstrations, she died of tuberculosis at the age of 34. Her 20-volume collection of essays, in which this encouraging quote appears, was published posthumously.

Mexican artist Frida Kahlo endured more than her share of difficulty. As a child she was bedridden by a severe case of polio that left one leg shorter and weaker than the other. As a teenager she was nearly killed in a bus accident, impaled by a handrail; the injury left her spine and pelvis damaged, requiring many more surgeries over the course of her life and rendering her unable to have children. Yet, though Kahlo struggled, she never gave up. During one of her many long and painfully frustrating periods of bedrest, she rigged up an easel over her bed so that she could continue to paint, even though she could not stand or even sit. She used images of herself in surgical braces and hospital beds repeatedly in her paintings, committed always to transforming her pain into meaningful work.
