Good news: The IRS has postponed the filing due date

Thanks to a federal disaster declaration, individuals and businesses in ALL Florida counties (including Miami-Dade, Orange, Broward & more) now have until May 1, 2025 to:

✅ File 2024 business & personal returns
✅ Submit 2023 returns on extension
✅ Make Q1 & Q2 estimated tax payments
✅ File payroll & excise tax returns
✅ Claim certain casualty losses from hurricane damage

Heads up: You still owe any payments that were due before the storms hit—but there’s relief for many other deadlines. And if you get a penalty notice in error, you can request it be waived.

Olsen’s laughter was truly infectious—he could light up any room with his jokes and big personality. He had a love-hate relationship with tax season, but what he truly loved was his family, friends, and the clients who became like family.

His presence is deeply missed, but his impact will never be forgotten.

BOI Update:

The initial deadline for companies to file beneficial ownership information (BOI) reports was reinstated today, Monday, December 23.

The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals granted the Department of Justice (DOJ) motion to lift an injunction put in place by a Dec. 3 district court ruling.

This means that all non-exempt reporting companies formed prior to January 1, 2024 must file their initial BOIR by January 1, 2025, the deadline originally imposed by FinCEN.

And it's not just the shutdown that could complicate the current tax season.

A government shutdown means a halt in operations in government agencies, like the IRS. Slowing an already heavy season.

"There’s some uncertainty there," said IRS commissioner Daniel Werfel, who told reporters earlier this year that he could preserve some functions if this were to happen.

This is a problem the IRS normally does not have to worry about. Government shutdowns almost always occur in the fall and early winter around the opening of the government's fiscal year on Oct. 1.

In addition to this issue, there is also the matter of the bipartisan tax deal that would impact some current returns. It has passed the House of Representatives but is currently stalled in the Senate.

The Tax Relief for American Families and Workers Act of 2024 includes a trio of business deductions that could impact 33 million small businesses and an expansion of the child tax credit, which nearly 46 million Americans claim annually. Most of the bill's provisions would apply retroactively to 2023 federal returns as well as 2024 and 2025 returns.

These twin taxpayer concerns — both a shutdown and this tax bill — may come to a head at the same time later this month with the bipartisan tax bill being included in an overall compromise bill that would also keep the IRS funded.
