Meet Gateway Bank's next CEO, Josh Flake. 👏

Josh joined Gateway in 2021, first as a VP of Commercial Loans before being promoted to Chief Credit Officer. He's been part of some of the bank's strongest performing years on record. He's also become one of the clearest examples of what Gateway's culture actually looks like in practice.

"Making a living isn’t about what you get. Making a life is about what you give," Josh says. "Gateway allows me to be the best version of myself possible, while pouring back into the local community."

Josh's goal as CEO is to honor Gateway's past, strengthen its present, and help the bank adapt for whatever comes next — without losing what makes it different from every other bank you've ever worked with. That's a promise we're holding him to. 😄

Congratulations to Josh and his counterpart Scott Morris, our current Market President who will move into the role of President. We can't wait to see what the next chapter holds!

08/26/2026

If you've ever walked into Gateway Bank and felt like you were somewhere unique, a lot of that is because of the culture we started building from the very beginning. Scott Morris was there to see it — and as Gateway's incoming President, he'll be here to carry that legacy forward. 👏

Scott was one of James Christensen's first hire in 2008, back when Gateway was brand new. Next year when James retires, Scott will become President, and current Chief Credit Officer Josh Flake will become CEO.

Scott deeply understands our bank and community, and he shares every value that has made Gateway what it is today. In his own words: "I honestly enjoy my job, love my customers, and care for the staff like family. The bank is so much more than a job for me. It's a way to make a difference in people's lives."

Watch this message from Scott, and read the full announcement in the comments. We couldn't be more excited for what's ahead — for Scott and Josh, our team, and our customers. 🎉

Big news from Gateway Bank President & CEO James Christensen: After 40 years in banking and nearly 20 with Gateway, he is retiring in June 2027.

James will remain on our Board of Directors and Loan Committee, so he's not going far. But for him, it's the right time to pass the torch to two amazing people who have been building the bank by his side.

Scott Morris — one of James' first hires in 2008 — will become President.

Josh Flake — our Chief Credit Officer and a cornerstone of our strongest performance years — will step into the CEO role.

Watch this video and read the announcement (link in comments) to hear the full story, including what this means for you, our team, and our community.

As James says, "Gateway is bigger than any one person, including me. We built it that way on purpose. Gateway is not your typical bank, and that won’t ever change." 💙

Gateway Bank continues to grow, and we're excited to introduce you to our newest team member, Julie. 🎉

Julie will work alongside COO/SVP Jennifer Stevens and Chief Compliance Officer Rachel Farrar to support all aspects of compliance and risk management. In a small, close-knit bank like Gateway, this role touches everything. We're grateful for her support!

We asked Julie a few questions to help you get to know her:

Favorite part of the role so far?
Doing work that feels meaningful.

Fun fact?
I enjoy watching UFC fights and more recently Banana Ball baseball games.

Favorite thing to do in Arizona?
Taking road trips, exploring new areas, going to local events (such as swap meets and car shows), and swimming with my granddaughters.

Tap 👍 or drop a comment to welcome Julie to the Gateway family! 💙

"Businesses need more than just an order taker. They need a consultant and a friend." - Scott Morris, Gateway Bank Market President - Mesa 🤝

That's the difference you feel when working with Gateway. Many of our conversations with business owners have nothing to do with banking or lending at all, and everything to do with their hopes, dreams, and struggles. Our job is to help them get to the next level and stay by their side through good times and tough times. It's one of the many things that makes this "Not Your Typical Bank" ( ).

A new headquarters isn't just a new address, but a statement about where you're headed. Congratulations to the DentiMax Imaging Services team on their big move!

Last month, DentiMax officially opened their new Operations HQ with more space, better infrastructure, and a dedicated team ready to serve more dental practices in our community. DentiMax used their financing from Gateway to make this vision real, and we couldn't be prouder to be by their side in making it happen.

Owner David Arnett says, “Gateway has been incredibly easy to work with and was tremendous in helping us secure the SBA loan for our new office building. What could have been a difficult and time-consuming process was made much smoother because of their help. We truly appreciate the team at Gateway Bank and value their partnership.”

Here's to more space, bigger impact, and everything that comes next!

This month, we're wishing a very happy birthday to Rachel, Jessica, Gilbert, and Mansour: four team members who make Gateway better — and more fun — for everyone around them. 🎂🎉

Gateway’s SVP/COO, Jennifer Stevens, and Chief Credit Officer, Josh Flake, shared some kind words about each person…

Rachel: “Rachel is truly one of a kind. She is super smart and your best confidant. She is the absolute best, not only as woman but also as a co-worker. Gateway Bank is truly grateful for her.”

Jessica: “Jessica is hands down the biggest prankster in the office. If people are laughing uncontrollably, she’s usually involved somehow. While her husband and bank account may not appreciate all of her Temu and Amazon purchases, we surely do. Gateway Bank wouldn’t be the same without her!”

Gilbert: “Gilbert is the smoothest member of the Gateway team (and I’m not just talking about his bald head). He is fantastic at what he does. With effortless swag, he always gets the job done in 60 minutes or less.”

Mansour: “Mansour is newer to the team, but has fit in extremely well since day one. He’s always willing to lend a helping hand and embodies the Gateway spirit. If you’re lucky enough, you may even get an invite to visit his Tunisian palace.”

Tap 👍 or drop a comment to help us wish Rachel, Jessica, Gilbert, and Mansour a very happy birthday.

In 2011, Stephanie Petteruti started building her dream salon with two chairs and one goal: to help aspiring stylists be creative and create their own dream life. ✨

Today, Savante Salon has 28 team members and one of the most respected reputations in the Valley. Now, they're expanding with support from Gateway Bank.

Stephanie is using her first-ever business loan — after 15 years of being entirely self-funded! — to open a stunning new location with 21 styling chairs and a brow bar. She joked that her previous salons were "built off IKEA, HomeGoods, and dreams." This one is the salon she always wished for.

When we asked Stephanie what she's most proud of, she didn't talk about revenue or square footage. She talked about the young stylists she's helped grow straight out of school: people who now have careers, creative lives, and futures they're building.

That's the kind of business we lend to *and* root for. 📣

Congratulations, Stephanie and the entire Savante team. Here's to the next 15+ years and your beautiful new salon!

It was 10:30 p.m. on a Sunday in 2021, and Gateway Bank Market President Scott Morris was headed back to the branch. A neighbor's Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) application was stuck at another bank, and the deadline to apply for funds was closing. 😨

Scott said, "Let me get the kids to bed, and we'll meet at the branch." They submitted the application together late that night, and it was approved the next morning — hours before the program's funding ran out.

"There isn't a mechanism to do that at a large bank. There is at a small bank," Scott said. Chief Credit Officer Josh Flake added, "There's no pressure on our staff to run through a certain amount of numbers [of transactions]. There's pressure on the staff to make a difference."

That's what motivates our team every day. Hear the full story from Scott and Josh on the latest episode of the Mesa Chamber of Commerce podcast. 🎧
