Starting May 1, 2026, VA made targeted changes to appraisal standards under Chapter 12 of the Lender Handbook.
This isn’t a complete overhaul — but it DOES remove several common deal-stoppers:
• Detached structures no longer held to MPRs
• Radon requirements removed for new construction
• Non-vented heater certifications eliminated
• Paint rules simplified
• Lead paint scope narrowed
The core standard still stands: safe, sanitary, structurally sound.
But these changes = fewer unnecessary repairs, smoother closings, and better outcomes for VA buyers.
