AUTO INSURANCE .What does it all mean? Without an Insurance License, the terminology can be confusing. LET US HELP!
1. Liability Coverage (Required in most states)
This is the most important and legally required coverage in most places.
Bodily Injury Liability – Pays for injuries you cause to others (medical bills, lost wages, legal fees). Property Damage Liability – Pays for damage you cause to someone else’s property (cars, fences, buildings).
👉 Example: You rear-end another car — this coverage pays for their injuries and vehicle repairs.
2. Collision Coverage
Pays to repair or replace your vehicle after an accident, regardless of who is at fault.
👉 Example: You hit a pole or another car — your car repairs are covered (minus your deductible).
3. Comprehensive Coverage
Covers damage to your car from non-collision events.
This includes: Theft, Vandalism, Fire, Hail, Falling objects, Hitting an animal.
👉 Example: A deer runs into your car or your windshield gets cracked by hail.
4. Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist Coverage
Protects you if the other driver has no insurance or not enough insurance.
👉 Example: You’re hit by a driver who doesn’t carry insurance — this coverage steps in to pay for your injuries and sometimes vehicle damage.
5. Medical Payments/Personal Injury Protection (PIP)
Covers medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault.
MedPay – Typically more limited, covers medical bills.
PIP – Broader (in some states), may include lost wages and other expenses.
👉 Example: You and your passenger go to the ER after a crash — this helps cover those costs.
6. Deductibles (Important concept)
The amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in (usually applies to comprehensive and collision).
👉 Example: If you have a $1,000 deductible and $5,000 in damage, insurance pays $4,000.
7. Optional Add-Ons (Endorsements)
These vary by policy but can be very valuable:
Rental Reimbursement – Pays for a rental car while yours is being repaired
Roadside Assistance – Covers towing, jump-starts, lockouts
Gap Insurance – Covers the difference between what you owe and what your car is worth if totaled
New Car Replacement – Replaces your car with a new one (if eligible).
