As insurance agents, weather always makes us a little nervous—especially this time of year. 🌪️⛈️
Over the years, we have learned that a little preparation can go a long way when severe weather strikes. These are just a few things we like to remind our clients about. Some are things we should routinely review, while others are especially important when preparing for a storm.
📝 Always Review Your Policies
• Check your coverage limits: Take a few minutes to review your homeowners, renters, or business policy. Make sure you understand what is covered, including wind and hail, and that your coverage limits still reflect the current cost to replace your property.
• Remember the flood gap: Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage. If you need flood insurance through the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), remember that policies generally have a waiting period before coverage takes effect.
• Check your auto coverage: Make sure you have comprehensive coverage on your vehicle. Comprehensive coverage can help with damage from hail, wind, falling trees, and other covered events.
📸 Document Your Belongings
• Create a home inventory: Take photos or videos of each room, closet, drawer, and the exterior of your home. This can be extremely helpful if you ever have to file a claim.
• Save receipts: Keep receipts or other proof of purchase for higher-value items such as electronics, appliances, jewelry, and televisions.
• Email everything to yourself: Save your inventory photos and important documents somewhere you can access them from anywhere, especially if you have to evacuate.
📂 Protect Important Documents
• Keep copies of your insurance policies, policy numbers, agent contact information, and claims numbers somewhere safe and easily accessible.
• Store important documents such as birth certificates, passports, mortgage papers, and insurance documents in a waterproof container or another secure location.
🏠 Prepare Your Property
• Secure loose items: Bring in lawn furniture, potted plants, outdoor decorations, and anything else that could become dangerous debris in high winds.
• Maintain your roof and trees: Keep trees trimmed and remove dead or damaged branches. Regularly inspect your roof and address small problems before they become major storm damage.
Most importantly, don’t wait until a storm is headed your way to review your insurance. Once severe weather is approaching, it may be too late to make certain coverage changes.
