Dear Members...This is a good reminder from the Ada County Sheriff's Office. Always hang up and call the agency/company/financial institution from a trusted number.
Our Financial Crimes Detectives specialize in uncovering fraud and holding offenders accountable. They analyze financial records, track transactions, interview victims and suspects, and work with banks and other agencies to gather evidence and build cases for prosecution.
In Ada County, detectives are seeing an increase in scams involving supposed missed court or jury appearances. Residents are receiving fake texts, emails, and phone calls claiming they must pay a “bail” to avoid arrest. Scammers often use spoof phone numbers to make it appear the call is coming from a legitimate law enforcement agency.
When scammers make contact, they will often create a sense of urgency, fear, and isolation to get people to comply. They will try to keep you on the phone or remain in close contact with you while you retrieve the money or information they requested.
Detectives want the community to know that if someone calls saying they are from a government agency, they will never ask for payment with crypto, gift cards, or wire transfers. If the caller is asking for any of those things, it is a major red flag, and you should hang up the phone or ignore the text.
We are extremely thankful for the efforts of our financial crimes detectives, whose work helps protect Ada County residents from scammers everyday!
