$1.46 million.

That’s how much Americans now believe they need to retire comfortably, according to Northwestern Mutual’s 2026 Planning and Progress Study. It’s an attention-grabbing number – but it doesn’t have to be a discouraging one.

There is no universal “magic number” for retirement. What you need depends on the life you want to live, when you plan to retire, how much you expect to spend and how long your retirement may last. And with higher living costs and longer life expectancies, it’s understandable that many people are questioning whether they are on track.
Here in Milwaukee, this is especially apparent. More than half of residents (52%) believe they could outlive their savings. But focusing too much on a single number can distract from the more important question: Do you have a plan?

If you’re unsure, start small. Take 15 minutes this week to review your retirement accounts, check whether you’re maximizing your employer match, and maybe consider increasing your contribution by 1%. Write down when you’d like to retire and what you want that next chapter of life to look like.

September is often called the "baby boom" month, with more babies born this month than almost any other time of the year. It's certainly been a baby boom year for MHF Wealth Partners. We've already welcomed one MHF baby in 2026, with three more little ones on the way!
