Important Lesson

The Trump administration has proposed a legal settlement to end the Biden-era Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) Plan for student loan repayment. If approved by the court, over 7 million current enrollees would be required to transition to other repayment options that comply with legal requirements. The Department of Education would stop accepting new applications, deny pending ones, and give existing participants a limited window to choose an alternative plan.

The SAVE plan was initially set to phase out by July 1, 2028, but the proposed settlement would accelerate that timeline. A new income-driven repayment option, the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP), is expected to launch by July 1, 2026. In the meantime, borrowers can explore alternatives such as the Income-Based Repayment (IBR) plan or standard repayment plans. The SAVE plan had offered benefits including $0 monthly payments for some low-income borrowers and faster loan forgiveness for those with lower balances. Interest on loans under the SAVE plan resumed on August 1, 2025.
