I posted this Belden photo this morning and promptly took it down because a lot of people were upset by it. As we sorted pairs this afternoon I couldn’t help but think about how we share this sugar-coated version of life on social media.

People want to see cattle in belly-deep grass with healthy calves at their sides. They want to see a cowboy trotting along a mountainside with wildflowers dotting the landscape. Most people want the fairytale. The reality is that ranching is not always rainbows and unicorns. Come calving there will be snow, many late nights, muddy boots, and straw in places you’d rather not have it.

As much as we try to keep all of the calves warm and well-fed the reality is that sometimes this happens. There will be days we’ll have an unexpected Spring storm and our calving barn will be a mess of blankets, colostrum, warm milk, and cold noses. Our top priority is always the care of our cattle but we simply cannot control the weather and Mother Nature can be harsh and unrelenting, especially in the mountains of Wyoming. The reality and the hard truth is that ranching isn’t always pretty and it isn’t always easy.
