A former Volusia County teacher has been arrested for a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old student.

Patrick Gingras, 35, formerly a teacher at Taylor Middle High School in Pierson, was arrested late Wednesday on a warrant for sexual conduct with a student by an authority figure.

The investigation began in February 2024 after school staff reported the possible relationship to the school resource deputy. The student involved initially denied any relationship. However, detectives continued the investigation and obtained cell phone evidence that revealed the truth.

Gingras, who taught high school intensive reading, was escorted off campus during the initial investigation and placed on leave by Volusia County Schools to prevent access to students. The school district opened an internal investigation and did not renew Gingras’ contract at the end of the school year.

An arrest warrant was signed by a judge this week and Gingras (DOB 3/23/1989) was taken into custody Wednesday night. He is being held in the Volusia County Branch Jail with a bond of $25,000 and several conditions to his release if he posts bail, including a GPS monitor, no access to Internet without a court order, and no contact with the student or any witnesses in the case.

MEMPHIS, TN—On January 8, 2025, Mount Moriah Station Task Force Officers were looking for a suspect wanted for multiple thefts and burglaries. Officers located the suspect's vehicle, a tan GMC Sierra, in the 1000 block of Bonnie Lane. Officers observed the male suspect, Trae Payne, leave in the truck. The vehicle came to a stop at the gas station at 4286 Macon Road. Task Force Officers pulled on the lot and activated their lights and sirens. Payne put his truck in reverse and hit the gas, striking an occupied marked MPD unit. He then put the truck in drive and accelerated, striking a second occupied marked MPD unit. After ramming both squad cars, the suspect fled the scene, and officers pursued it. The vehicle stopped at Warford and Mt Olive, where Payne ran from the vehicle while leaving it in drive. Payne ran to a black truck that was stopped at the light, pulled on the door handle, and attempted to get inside when he was taken into custody. Officers used an MPD vehicle to stop the truck and keep it from injuring individuals nearby.

Trae Payne, 29, was charged with Assault Against a First Responder (2X), Evading Arrest in an Automobile, Evading Arrest on Foot, Reckless Endangerment, Violation of Vehicle Registration, Drivers to Exercise Due Care, and Resisting Official Detention.

This is an ongoing investigation and additional charges may be filed.
