It's easy to set estate planning aside once you've done a version of it. The only thing is, the file keeps changing. Accounts get opened. Families grow. Laws shift. And in the space between signing and revisiting, a handful of reasonable-sounding assumptions can start to stand in for an up-to-date plan.

It's easy to set estate planning aside once you've done a version of it. You sign the paperwork. You name a beneficiary. You mentally close the file. The only thing is, the file keeps changing. Government bonds have been selling off recently, pushing Treasury yields higher. For investors holding bond funds, that can mean watching the supposedly safe part of their portfolio lose value. Which raises an interesting question: If recent returns from bonds have been so lousy, why bother owning them in the first place? We explore this in our latest blog post!

Updating the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies and financial accounts isn’t fun, but it’s critical to making sure your loved ones are protected and your money goes where you want. Here’s what to know:
➡️ A beneficiary designation supersedes your will. So, if you name one person in your will and somebody else in your retirement accounts, your money may be going to someone you no longer intend.
➡️ Beneficiary designations can help keep your assets out of probate, which is often lengthy, expensive, and public for your family.
➡️ Update your beneficiaries after major family events: marriage, divorce, the birth of a child or grandchild, or the unfortunate loss of a spouse or loved one.
➡️If you’ve opened new accounts or rolled over a retirement account, your beneficiaries won’t automatically update. Take the time now to add primary and contingent beneficiaries.

Retirement has four connected risks to manage rather than a single investment problem to solve: longevity, market, health and decision. A financial professional can help you look at all four risks together instead of one at a time, and help you plan for the ones that never show up on a statement.

Many people can tell you their portfolio balance. Far fewer can tell you what else determines whether their retirement actually works. That's understandable. The balance is the number on the statement. It's concrete, and it feels like a score. But judging retirement readiness by that one figure is a....
