"Diversification is the only free lunch in investing." — Harry Markowitz

The idea is simple: spreading investments across asset classes (stocks, bonds, real estate, and cash) reduces risk without giving up the returns needed to fund a retirement.

As retirement gets closer, that balance needs a fresh look. Risk tolerance changes with time and circumstances, and the portfolio built a decade ago probably doesn’t reflect where things stand today.

At RBG Wealth Advisors, our Risk Number calculator quantifies exactly that. How much risk you want, how much you currently have, and how much you need to take to reach your goals.

Working with RBG Wealth Advisors is not a one-time plan and a quarterly statement.

It’s an ongoing relationship built around your full financial picture. Tax strategy and investment management coordinated together. A plan that evolves as your life does. And an advisor who is accountable for the details that fall through the cracks.

The families we work with do not have to wonder if everything is connected. That’s our job.

Financial support for an aging parent often begins gradually rather than through a single, deliberate choice. What starts as paying one occasional bill can quickly evolve into a permanent line item in your monthly budget.

The real cost is frequently your own retirement savings. Because your peak earning years and the growth potential of your investments are finite, reducing your savings rate in your 50s can have lasting consequences that are nearly impossible to correct later.

When elder care becomes a financial reality, it needs to be integrated into your financial plan proactively, rather than letting it dictate your future.

Your investment strategy and your tax strategy should not be strangers to each other.

At RBG Wealth Advisors, they are built together by advisors who hold both CFP® and CPA credentials, with no commissions, no conflicts of interest, and one goal: helping you build and preserve the financial life you have worked for.

That is what fee-only, integrated planning actually looks like.

Is paying off your mortgage early always the right move?

The emotional appeal is obvious. No payment, no debt, a clean slate heading into retirement. But the financial outcome is not always the same as the emotional one.

Paying off a low-rate mortgage by pulling from an investment portfolio can reduce liquidity and disrupt a tax strategy that took years to build. For some households the tradeoff makes sense. For others, the capital does more work staying invested.

The right answer depends on your rate, your portfolio, your tax situation, and what retirement income actually needs to look like for your household.

Saved more in a 529 than your child ended up needing?

SECURE Act 2.0 now allows unused 529 funds to roll directly into the beneficiary's Roth IRA. Up to $35,000 over a lifetime, tax-free, as long as the account has been open for at least 15 years and a few other conditions are met.

For families in this situation, unused college savings now have a place to go.

Divorce is a financially complex event to navigate, and it doesn’t come with clear directions for what to prioritize first.

Here are a few decisions that deserve attention sooner rather than later.

During major life transitions, financial decisions are often interconnected. Having legal, tax, and financial guidance working together can help reduce costly oversights.

At what point does managing your own finances start costing you more than it saves?

A growing portfolio, business ownership, equity compensation, or a changing tax situation can each add complexity on their own. Combined, they create financial decisions that are harder to coordinate without a clear strategy.

At RBG Wealth Advisors, financial planning is built around coordinating all the moving pieces so decisions work together, not independently.

Are you leaving money on the table every time you donate?

A donor-advised fund lets you contribute a large amount in a high-income year, take the full deduction immediately, and distribute to the causes you care about on your own timeline. Donating appreciated stock directly sidesteps the capital gains tax you would owe if you sold it first, and the full market value remains deductible.

Neither strategy requires a year-end deadline to work. They just require a plan.

January goals have a way of losing momentum by May.

The good news is that midyear is still early enough to course correct on almost everything.

A few things to take a look at:
✔️ Are your estimated tax payments reflecting what you have actually earned in 2026?
✔️ Are retirement contributions on pace for the full annual limit?
✔️ Has anything changed this year that should trigger an estate or beneficiary review?
✔️ Has your portfolio drifted from its target allocation?
✔️ Is your spending tracking with what the plan assumed?

The second half of the year responds well to decisions made now.
