Since it's Italian-American Heritage Month AND Indigenous Peoples' Day, let's talk truths as we plaque-maxx at the Verrazzano monument in the Battery.

Christopher Columbus, a Genoese navigator sailing for Spain who never set foot in what is now the United States, somehow became a symbol of Italian-American pride and belonging.

But Italy wasn't unified until 1861. Claiming him as symbol of a unified Italian identity ignores centuries of complicated history.

Southern Italians and Sicilians experienced profound economic and political marginalization following unification. And when they crossed the Atlantic seeking better lives, they encountered xenophobia, prejudice, exploitation, and violence.

Italian Americans were sold Columbus as a symbol of acceptance in a country that had spent generations treating them as outsiders. And now that we understand the fuller history, it's time to question why we're still holding on to him.

My Italian pride doesn't come from men who crossed W2
family, and likely yours, were treated as lesser people. I'm certainly not going to honor them by celebrating the subjugation of someone else's people.

San Gennaro got rained out. Jenny Kelly said, “Hold my chianti.”

This feast had *everything* -- Sausage & peppers, chicken parm, homemade pizzas, zeppole, cookies, music, dancing, family and friends.

With a crew like mine, you don’t need Mulberry Street to have a feast. 🤌🏼

Send this to the Italian who would absolutely do the same thing.
