Teaching a craft we are an expert in is a lesson in patience, but it’s something I’m very passionate about. I tell clients every day “if I can share my brain to help others, then that’s what I will do to give back”

Last month I had a call with an individual that was impacted by Hurricane Helene in North Carolina. She was in a very rural area and one of few individuals that didn’t lose everything. She too was helping her community in a time of need and decided to give back her time by helping a small business owner that lost everything. She didn’t know anything about bookkeeping, but she knew enough and had to patience to figure it out.

We bonded over that sentiment and went to work.

It’s what experts do - we come together when it matters the most!

For my business friends … Here is my contribution on how we deal with those pesky LLC W9s & 1099s.

Gathering W9s from payees is not enough!
We must READ them and make sure that they are not invalid. QuickBook’s vendor set-up can be tricky in that we need a Single Member LLC owner's name to print on the first line of a 1099, not the LLC name.

Remember that Forms W9 and 1099 are FEDERAL IRS forms. An "LLC" is a STATE legal protection document, not recognized by the Feds and even some states. The W9 defines the TAX status of the Payee. An LLC can have ANY federal status. They default to Single Member/Disregarded entities that file as a Schedule C on the owner's 1040. An LLC with multiple members files as a Partnership on Form 1065. They can opt to file as a C-Corp on Form 1120 or an S-Corp Form 1120-S. Many LLCs struggle with completing the W9. Some bookkeepers are also under the impression that "LLC" means corporation and thus exempt, or they assume that all LLCs get 1099s. Most importantly, gather W9s BEFORE paying for services and during the year and PLEASE don’t wait until January! Blessings for a peaceful and loving Christmas Holiday!

I’m doing something I don’t like doing - leaving the comfort of my home and putting myself in the middle of a bunch of people.

The nerd in me is excited to talk accounting and business, the neurodivergent anti-social introvert is screaming RUN!

Is this normal? ABSOLUTELY!
