The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced an additional $171.2 million in grants, bringing the total to $486 million, and $43 million for 3,300 Stability Vouchers to tackle unsheltered and rural homelessness. This initiative will benefit 62 Continuum of Care (CoC) communities across the nation.

These grants and vouchers aim to provide housing with supportive services to people living on the streets, in encampments, under bridges, or in rural areas, who have traditionally lacked access to such solutions. The selected CoC communities were required to partner with public housing authorities to access housing resources, and these authorities will receive priority for the special allocation of Stability Vouchers, helping homeless individuals afford housing.

This announcement is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's ongoing efforts to address homelessness, which includes the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 that allocated nearly 70,000 Emergency Housing Vouchers and $5 billion in HOME Investment Partnership homelessness grants. HUD and the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) have also launched the House America initiative, aiming to place over 100,000 households into permanent housing and add over 40,000 units of affordable housing to the development pipeline.

These resources demonstrate a commitment to solving homelessness with housing and supportive services, responding to calls for federal assistance to address unsheltered and rural homelessness, and providing communities with resources to respond to homeless encampments humanely and effectively, without criminalizing homelessness.
