Auto Insurance 101: What is Liability Coverage? 🚗

Liability coverage is the part of your auto insurance that protects YOU if you are at fault in an accident.

It helps pay for:
• Injuries to other people
• Damage to someone else’s vehicle
• Damage to property (fences, buildings, etc.)
• Legal expenses if you’re sued

There are two main parts of liability coverage:

Bodily Injury Liability – Covers medical bills, lost wages, and related expenses for others injured in an accident you cause.

Property Damage Liability – Covers damage you cause to another person’s car or property.

Important to know:
Liability coverage does NOT cover damage to your own vehicle. That’s where Collision and Comprehensive coverage come in.

Most states require a minimum amount of liability coverage, but minimum limits are often not enough in a serious accident. Higher limits can help better protect your assets and financial future.

Think of liability coverage as protection for everything you could be held responsible for after an accident.

Life Insurance 101: Term Life vs. Whole Life

Choosing life insurance can feel confusing, but understanding the basics makes it much easier.

Term Life Insurance:
Term life covers you for a specific period of time (like 10, 20, or 30 years).
If something happens to you during that term, your beneficiaries receive the payout.

Why people choose term:
• More affordable
• Great for income protection
• Ideal for covering a mortgage or raising a family
• Simple and straightforward coverage

Whole Life Insurance:
Whole life is permanent coverage that lasts your entire lifetime (as long as premiums are paid). It also builds cash value over time that you can borrow against.

Why people choose whole life:
• Lifetime protection
• Builds cash value
• Can be used for long-term financial planning
• Fixed premiums that don’t increase

Quick way to think of it:
Term Life = Temporary protection for a set time
Whole Life = Lifetime coverage with a savings component

Both serve important purposes — the right choice depends on your goals, budget, and long-term plans.

Home Insurance Tip: What is “Other Structures” Coverage? 🏡

Other Structures Coverage (Coverage B) protects buildings on your property that are NOT attached to your home.

This can include:
• Detached garages
• Sheds
• Fences
• Gazebos
• Workshops
• Barns or storage buildings

If one of these structures is damaged by a covered loss like a storm, fire, or fallen tree, this part of your policy helps pay for repairs or replacement.

Most home policies automatically include Other Structures coverage at about 10% of your dwelling coverage.
Example: If your home is insured for $300,000, you may have around $30,000 for other structures.

Important tip:
If you have a large shop, barn, or expensive detached building, you may need to increase this coverage or list that specific structure on your policy to make sure you’re fully protected.

Not sure what your policy includes? We’re always happy to review it with you and make sure everything on your property is properly covered.

Understanding Comp vs. Collision Coverage 🚗

If you’ve ever looked at your auto policy and wondered what the difference is between Comprehensive and Collision, here’s a simple breakdown:

Collision Coverage:
This covers damage to your vehicle if you hit something — like another car, a fence, a pole, or even if you roll your vehicle.
Example: You back into a mailbox or get in an accident with another driver.

Comprehensive Coverage (Comp):
This covers damage from things out of your control that are NOT a collision.
Example: Theft, vandalism, hail, fire, falling trees, or hitting a deer.

Quick way to remember:
Collision = accident with an object or vehicle
Comprehensive = weather, animals, theft, and other unexpected events

Both cover your vehicle, but for very different types of claims.

As spring approaches (hang in there, it's just around the corner!), you may be planning some renovations for your home. Keep in mind that for any major improvements, it’s a good idea to check with your insurance agent to see if you need to make changes to your existing coverage to ensure you’re properly insured.
