An insurance deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket for a covered claim before your insurance pays the rest.

Example: If you have a $500 deductible and your car has $3,000 in covered damage from an accident:
- You pay the first $500.
- Your insurance company pays the remaining $2,500, assuming the damage is covered.

A few things to know:
- Higher deductible = lower premium. You typically pay less for insurance each month but more out of pocket if you file a claim.
- Lower deductible = higher premium. You typically pay more for insurance but less when you file a covered claim.

The bottom line: Your deductible is your share of the cost when you file certain types of insurance claims. Choose an amount you could comfortably afford if an accident happened tomorrow.

It began in 1978, when President Jimmy Carter proclaimed September 28th as National Good Neighbor Day by stating: "We are mindful that the noblest human concern is concern for others. Understanding, love, and respect build cohesive families and communities. The same bonds cement our nation and the nations of this world."

• Keep walkways, parking areas & stairs well-lit
• Keep gutters & downspouts from draining onto walkways
• Clean spills quickly & post warning signs
• Repair loose flooring, rugs, tiles & other hazards
• Have a plan for snow & ice removal
• Repair potholes & uneven surfaces promptly
