Great news — the dividend checks are on the way! ✔️
The Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation (BWC) is mailing out paper checks throughout September and October as part of the recently approved $1 billion dividend for Ohio employers. Our records show that your policy is eligible for a dividend.

Please be sure to watch your mail over the coming weeks. All checks will remain valid for 90 days after issuance.

Please check that the physical and mailing addresses listed for your policy on your MyPolicy page are current and accurate to ensure the dividend is sent to the correct address.

Please note the dividend will be reduced by any outstanding balance owed.

💵 GROSS vs. NET — Do you know the difference?

It’s one of those payroll terms that seems simple… until BONUS TIME. 👀💰

GROSS = the amount earned before taxes and deductions.

NET = the amount the employee actually takes home after taxes and deductions.

Here’s where the confusion can happen:

An employer wants to give an employee a $1,000 GROSS bonus.
🎉 “You’re getting a $1,000 bonus!”

Then payday comes around…

💵 The employee sees a deposit closer to $700.
😳 “Wait… where did the other $300 go?!”

Taxes and deductions happened.

If you want your employee to NET a specific amount, be sure to tell your payroll processor. There’s a difference between giving someone a $1,000 gross bonus and making sure they take home $1,000.

At Compass, our payroll software has a handy check calculator that can determine the gross amount needed for an employee to NET the amount you want them to receive.

That calculation is called a gross-up.

So when bonus time rolls around, don't just say:

❌ “Give them $1,000.”

Be specific:

✅ “I want them to TAKE HOME $1,000.”

Because in payroll, gross and net are definitely NOT the same thing. 😉

Unfortunately, payroll fraud is very real — and it’s getting more creative.

Fraudsters may impersonate an employee, an owner, or even someone from your own company and make a request that looks completely legitimate.

Common payroll scams include:

▶️ Direct deposit fraud
▶️ Fake employee fraud
▶️ Urgent or false requests
▶️ Unauthorized payroll changes
▶️ Impersonation phone calls

At Compass Payroll, we see fraudulent attempts targeting small businesses, and we take them seriously. Our team is constantly watching for the red flags and doing our best to keep our clients — and their payroll — protected. 🛡️

A few simple ways to help catch fraud in its tracks:

✔️ Verify direct deposit changes by speaking directly with the employee — using a trusted phone number you already have on file.

✔️ Follow up on requests by contacting the person who supposedly made the request directly. Don’t rely solely on the email or phone number provided in the message.

✔️ Confirm changes with authorized contacts before making payroll or banking updates.

✔️ Got a suspicious phone call? Hang up and call the trusted number you already have on file for that contact.

🚩 When something feels “off,” stop and verify.

A few extra seconds of verification can prevent a very expensive payroll headache.

Because when it comes to payroll, “I thought that was you” is never a good explanation. 😬
