The national weather service has issued a wind chill advisory for NC this weekend. With the extreme lows, here are a couple of pointers to help around the house.

1) Check the outside spigots (front and back) to ensure they are protected from the freezing temperatures.
2) Open the kitchen and bathroom cabinets to allow the heat in your home (temp at least 68 degrees) to reach the pipes to assist in keeping them warm. You can leave the faucets dripping very slowly (both hot and cold taps) to keep the pipes from freezing.
3) Please be extremely careful walking or driving outside. This is supposed to be a “snow” event, but if you have anything remaining from last weekend’s event, snow-covered ice is still as slippery as ice!

Ice Storm coming our way. Please make your home as ready as possible and stay safe!

Power loss can cause your heating system to shut down, which increases the risk of frozen or burst pipes. While every home is different, we encourage you to take reasonable precautions now to help minimize potential damage.

Here are three steps to consider before Saturday morning:

1. Locate Your Emergency Water Shut-Off Valve
If a pipe bursts, shutting off your water quickly can help limit damage.
• Where to look: Typical locations include near the water heater, under a kitchen sink, or in a utility closet.
• Test it: Try turning the valve gently to ensure it works.

2. Prepare for Possible “No Heat” Conditions
If the power goes out, the usual advice to keep your thermostat at 60°F may not be effective. Consider these backups:
• Drip faucets: Allow both hot and cold faucets to drip slowly to keep water moving.
• Open cabinets: Open under-sink cabinet doors to allow warmer air to reach exposed pipes.

3. Reporting Power Outages
Please report any power outages directly to your electricity provider, not the management office.
• Duke Energy: Text OUT to 57801 or call 800-419-6356.
• If Duke is not your provider, please check your utility bill for reporting instructions.

If a Pipe Bursts: ACT QUICKLY
• Shut it off: Immediately turn off your main water valve to stop the flooding.
• If the valve fails: Call an emergency plumber immediately.
• Responsibility: broken pipes and resulting water damage from pipes serving individual homes are generally the homeowner’s responsibility. Immediate action is critical to limit the damage to your property.

Additional Reminders:
• Charge phones and electronic devices now.
• Check batteries in flashlights and other emergency supplies.
