Turning 65 and Medicare
For most people, turning 65 marks the first time for Medicare eligibility. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a 7-month window, starting 3 months prior to your 65th birth month and running through the end of the 3rd month following your 65th birth month. During this time, you can enroll in Medicare, avoiding late enrollment penalties and gaps in coverage.
During IEP, you can also enhance your Medicare coverage by:
- Adding a Part D prescription drug plan
- Choosing a Part C (Medicare Advantage) plan, or
- Selecting a Medicare Supplement plan to fill coverage gaps
